Barnstaple is the main regional town of North Devon and possibly the oldest borough in the UK. Nestling on the banks of the River Taw, Barnstaple's considerable early wealth was founded on the woollen trade. Other industries included lace making, pottery and glove making. Since the opening of the upgraded A361 in 1989 tourism has also flourished throughout North Devon bringing increased visitors to places like Bideford, Westward Ho!, the picture postcard village of Clovelly and Hartland Point.
