Andover is situated on the banks of the River Anton and grew up as a small market town centred on the woollen trade (hence place names such as "Sheeps Fair"). Today the towns largest employer is the Ministry of Defence following on from the opening of the RAF base during the First World War. Other notable employers include Twinings (famous for their tea and coffee), Simplyhealth, Lloyds and Thompson International Publishers. The Council is hoping to attract similar companies as they redevelop the now closed airfield. Every year the town holds the "Andover Care Festival" (being held this year on Saturday 7th October, 2019) which incorporates a variety of bands and family fun activities.
