Aylesbury is the main county town of Buckinghamshire and evidence suggests that there has been a settlement here since the Iron Ages. The market town has a rich and varied history having played a significant role in the English Civil War when it became a stronghold of the Parliamentarian forces. Later on, Louis XVIII lived nearby whilst in exile from France and his wife (Mary Jospehine of Savoy) became the only French Queen to have ever died on English soil. More recently still, the local Crown Court briefly held the worlds attention whilst hosting the trial of the Great Train Robbers in 1963. Like many similar market towns in the South East, Aylesbury's population had expanded markedly as it has become an overspill town for London. For those with a taste for hot food there is an annual Chilli Festival held at the nearby Waddesdon Manor (the next event is being held 1- 2nd September 2020).
