Basingstoke is the largest town in Hampshire with good access to London (48 miles) and other nearby towns such as Winchester and Southampton. Due to its proximity to London several major companies have located here including Eli Lilly, BNP Paribas and Sun Life Financial. Early industries included Brewing and Textiles. After being designated as a London overspill town there was a period of rapid growth, with the population rising from 52,000 in 1971 to over 150,000 in 2001. Each year the town holds a large community event called the "Basingstoke Festival" (last held 16th June- 9th July 2019).
